Barcelona are ready to hear permanent transfer offers for Ousmane Dembele for a fee of around €50m (£45m). [Sport, via Metro]
United made a last-ditch attempt to sign the 23-year-old French international – but failed. United were ready to pay 100% of his wages + a loan fee, but a deal couldn’t pan out.
United failed to secure a loan move as Dembele didn’t extend his contract at Barca. His contract expires in 2022 and by the time he’d return to Barca after a year with United, the Catalan club could’ve been in a vulnerable situation to sell the player for a cheaper fee.
Everything was agreed but his contract situation became a major hurdle in his move.
However, Barcelona want to sell Dembele on a permanent basis – and secure Memphis Depay’s services, who is Ronaldo Koeman’s #1 target since day one. They are annoyed with Dembele over his refusal to join the Red Devils.
Dembele won’t sign a new contract. Barcelona wants to sell him and buy Depay. La Liga rules make it mandatory for the club to sell before they buy. This time, Barcelona wants to sell on a permanent basis.
This presents a unique proposition for United and they should capitalise. The reports also suggest United could buy him in January. United should definitely consider this opportunity.
Liverpool are interested too – but their recent acqusition in Diogo Jota suggests United is a better fit as Dembele would get more game time.
