Southampton still looking to sign Manchester United young full-back

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has termed Brandon Williams as an “interesting player” as he seeks to bring the full-back to St Mary’s next season.

The Saints tried to sign Williams six during the winter transfer window, but United refused to sanction his exit.

Despite spending the whole season with the first team, Williams has found his game-time curtailed due to heavy competition.

He made only 13 appearances this term, with nine coming off the bench.

Hasenhuttl told Hampshire Live: “He is an interesting player and a good player, yes.

“As Olé [Gunnar Solskjaer] said, he does not think that a lot of players will leave his club so we keep on going!”

Williams played a key role last season, making more than 30 appearances in the left-back spot.

However, Luke Shaw and Alex Telles are now way ahead of him in the pecking order.

This season, Solskjaer has switched him to the right side of the defence. But it is a spot that belongs to Aaron Wan-Bissaka who is indispensable to the squad.

Williams has shown that he has the quality to play for Red Devils but he needs more playing time to develop.

He is the type of player who likes to give everything on the pitch and United should keep hold of him in the long term.

He likes to venture forward but his defensive game still needs plenty of improvement.

A loan move to Southampton looks to be a wise choice for the Red Devils.

The 20-year old full-back would get the experience of playing every week in the Premier League.

Diogo Dalot could return to Old Trafford after spending a season with AC Milan on a loan to cover Wan-Bissaka.
