Sir Alex Ferguson wants Manchester United to sign 26-year-old defender

Sir Alex Ferguson has told Manchester United to go ‘all out’ to secure the signing of defender Harry Maguire from Leicester City this summer. The England international has been regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford but so far, the club have not been able to find the breakthrough in terms of the transfer fee with the Foxes.

According to The Manchester Evening News, Ferguson is understood to be amazed with the Red Devils’ delay in pursuing the central defender and has urged the hierarchy to speed up negotiations regarding the potential transfer.

It is added that Ferguson believes the 26-year-old would be the perfect fit for the Mancunian giants after closely watching the defender in action during a FA Cup Youth final between the Red Devils and Sheffield United more than eight years ago.

The Red Devils have already failed with an opening bid in the region of £70m for Maguire and it is reported that Brendan Rodgers’ side are eyeing a figure of at least £80m to sanction the defender’s sale during the summer.

So far, the club have not made a renewed approach for the former Hull City man, but the same could happen in the near future, considering their struggles to keep regular clean sheets during the course of the previous season.

United were pretty average in terms of their defensive showing during the 2018/19 campaign and they happened to concede 54 goals from 38 matches, which was their worst-ever tally in the Premier League era.

As such, the club are definitely in need of a central defender with strong concentration and interception capabilities and Maguire seems to perfectly fit the bill with valuable Premier League experience on his CV.

Moreover, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown a keen intent on recruiting young British players this summer and Maguire at the age of 26, can become a long-term figure at the heart of the club’s backline.
