Signing Mbeumo could help Amorim define roles for key Man United duo

Manchester United are making quick progress this summer after enduring one of the worst seasons in their history.

The Red Devils slumped to a shocking 15th-place finish in the Premier League and suffered heartbreak in the UEFA Europa League final, falling to Tottenham Hotspur.

They have responded to a horrific 2024–25 season by snapping up Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day of the transfer window.

Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford looks set to become the next exciting addition, having reportedly given the green light for a switch to Old Trafford.

Top clubs like Arsenal and Newcastle United were eyeing a move for the 25-year-old but he has given his preference to the Theatre of Dreams.

Signing Mbeumo will be a big statement and could unlock manager Ruben Amorim’s vision for two other key United players.

The Cameroon international is expected to slot into the right number 10 role in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 set-up.

His arrival could allow Amad Diallo to flourish as a dynamic right wing-back.

Diallo has featured in that position under the Portuguese manager and impressed with his dribbling and fearless attacking runs.

Under Amorim, the wing-backs are the heartbeat of the system, required to drive the team forward and stretch opponents wide.

Playing five defensive-minded players at the back has held United back this term.

Amorim enjoyed great success by using Geovany Quenda in the same position at Sporting Lisbon.

Quenda has a similar profile to Diallo and will complete his transfer to Chelsea next summer, where he is expected to play as a winger.

Noussair Mazraoui could also find a new lease of life thanks to Mbeumo’s inclusion.

Mazraoui was signed from Bayern Munich as a full-back but he could be set for a new permanent role next campaign.

The Moroccan international has played in at least six different positions in the 2024-25 season but looks most comfortable in the right centre-back spot.

He has even admitted that his strengths lie more in disciplined defending than in marauding forward runs.

That makes him an ideal fit for Amorim’s hybrid defenders, who must calmly build from the back and step into midfield zones when in control.
