Teddy Sheringham believes Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has questions to answer about the exodus of players from the club this summer.
Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony are amongst the players who fell out of favour at Old Trafford following Amorim’s appointment last November.
They left the club this summer, joining a lengthy list of departures which also included Rasmus Hojlund, Jadon Sancho and Andre Onana.
The former Man United and England striker says that while he was initially on Amorim’s side, he feels the manager’s role in their exits must be scrutinised by the club.
“When you look at the amount of talent that has left United, you’ve got to look at Amorim,” Sheringham said. “It can’t just be the players who are to blame.
“You’ve got to ask what he’s doing as well. Why is he upsetting all these players? For instance, Antony had a tough time, but he can obviously play the game. He’s gone to Spain and done well.
“The club have to look at the manager and see how he’s working. If it’s one or two you don’t mind, but when you’ve got four or five talented boys leaving, it’s worrying.
“You see Rashford last week – he ripped Newcastle apart. Questions must be asked about the management if the fallouts continue. The club will be monitoring him for sure.”
The summer overhaul of the United squad has yet to deliver the desired results, with the team picking up just seven points from their first five games this season.
While the Red Devils have shown some signs of promise, some familiar failings have still been prevalent in each of their performances to date.
Their early elimination from the League Cup at Grimsby Town was a major disappointment, while the derby defeat at Manchester City left a sour taste.
United got their Premier League season back on track on Saturday with a hard-fought 2-1 home victory over Chelsea, which moved them up to 11th in the table.
With fixtures to come against Brentford (A) and Sunderland (H), United could head into their clash with Liverpool (A) on October 19 in a much healthier position.
Sheringham was pleased that United came out on top against Chelsea and believes Amorim needs to build on the result over the next few weeks.
“Any sign of optimism is great for Amorim at the moment,” Sheringham added. “I think he’s had a really tough time. It’s always been one step forward, two steps backwards with him.
“It’s a great result, although it was helped along with the sending off early on in the game, which is always nice when you’re struggling.
“If they had lost two points or even three points in that game, it could have been a catastrophe, but they held on for the win.
“Any victory over Chelsea is an excellent result, so hopefully they can move on from there next Saturday.”
Amorim’s side are the favourites to pick up three points at Brentford on Saturday, and will fancy their chances of getting the job done.
The Bees have collected just four points from their first five games and have been struggling for form under new manager Keith Andrews.
They have conceded ten goals this term, and the Red Devils have a golden opportunity at the Gtech Community Stadium to build some momentum heading into October.
