Shearer expects this Man Utd star to break his Premier League record

Alan Shearer has tipped 18-year-old sensation Mason Greenwood to break his Premier League goals record.

The former England international has been the Premier League’s all-time leading marksman with 260 goals since his retirement in 2006.

Shearer is 52 ahead of the next player on the list – Wayne Rooney. His record is even more impressive considering he had been playing for five years before the league was even established. In all, the for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker spent 14 seasons in the Premier League to reach that number.

As for Mason Greenwood, the 18-year-old took his tally up to 10 on the season with his fine equaliser in our 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United on Wednesday.

The teenager has predominantly been playing out on the right wing for us, though has performed well in his handful of opportunities up front in the Europa League.

Despite his young age and relatively few appearances, Alan Shearer expects Greenwood to go on and surpass his 260 goal tally.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day last night, Shearer commented:

“A potential superstar. I respect the power, left foot, right foot, and the way he gets his shot away early, he doesn’t give the keeper a chance to set himself.

“Whether it’s near-post or far-post. Everything is power, head down and hit it as hard as you can.

“Now, he can do it with his left or right foot. He gets it away early and the goalkeepers have no chance.

“I think in 12 or 13 years time, we could be talking about a Premier League record goalscorer.

“I know there’s so many things that can happen in someone’s career. But I think he’s that good.”

Mason Greenwood should get an opportunity to increase his final tally for the season when we travel to Leicester City in our Premier League finale on Sunday.
