Shaw, Maguire & Mainoo make England’s pre-Euro 2024 training squad, Rashford & Sancho left out

England manager Gareth Southgate has picked Manchester United trio Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire in his training squad for the 2024 European Championship.

The Three Lions will start as one of the favourites for the tournament in Germany but prior to that, they have two friendlies against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland.

Ahead of those games, Southgate has picked a 33-man squad which will be reduced to 26 for Euro 2024.

There are no surprises that Maguire has made the cut, considering he has been a mainstay in the heart of the defence for England despite his mixed form at club level.

Mainoo has retained his position on the back of a promising international breakthrough in March.

Shaw has spent most of the season on the sidelines with hamstring injuries, but the left-back has still made the squad. He could be assessed in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, there is no place for Marcus Rashford amid his disappointing club campaign.

The United graduate was brilliant last term with 30 goals to his name, but he has netted only eight goals this season. We would have personally preferred him over Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Jadon Sancho does not make the cut too despite showing promise with Borussia Dortmund. He has six goal contributions on loan, but it has not been sufficient to convince Southgate.

Unlike Rashford, Sancho has not played for the Three Lions in recent times. His last appearance came in September 2021 and we are not surprised by his exclusion from the provisional squad.
