La Liga underachievers Sevilla have reportedly decided against taking up an option to buy Manchester United loanee Alex Telles at the end of the season.
The Brazilian left-back left Old Trafford to team up with Los Rojiblancos on a temporary deal last summer in search of regular first-team action after playing second fiddle to Luke Shaw.
But despite making 27 appearances for the Andalusian outfit this term, including 18 in the league, the 30-year-old will return to base in the summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
After failing to establish himself at Man Utd upon his £15.4 million move from Porto in 2020, Telles hoped to reignite his career at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
However, with the squad struggling to gain a foothold in La Liga under two different managers, the career journeyman is on the verge of returning to the Premier League.
With Shaw going from strength to strength under Erik ten Hag in 2022/23, the Red Devils will unlikely give Telles another bite of the cherry, especially after signing Tyrell Malacia last summer.
The Dutch manager specifically asked for his compatriot at the start of his Man Utd career, seeing him as a long-term successor of the England international at the Theatre of Dreams.
While he may not have a future at United, Telles could still make the League Cup winners regret their decision to ship him to Spain.
Sevilla will play Man Utd in the Europa League quarter-finals next month, and according to United’s website, the Brazilian is eligible to take on his parent club.
Known for their well-documented success in Europe’s second-tier competition, Los Rojiblancos could give the Red Devils a run for their money despite only recently cutting ties with manager Jorge Sampaoli.
After winning the competition a record six times, the Spaniards deserve the benefit of the doubt, even though they face a nerve-shredding fight for La Liga survival.
