PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo has admitted that Manchester United are a ‘serious option’ for him ahead of the summer transfer deadline.
The 23-year-old is regarded an important player for the Dutch outfit, but has been fancied for a big-money move before the transfer window closes.
United have been regularly linked with his services, and it has been reported that he could join them regardless of the club’s pursuit of Antony.
Amidst this, the Dutchman has opened the door for a transfer by acknowledging that United are a serious option and he is aware of the reported interest.
He told ESPN via Manchester Evening News: “There are also other options, United are a serious option. I can hear it all. I try to shut myself off from it, but it’s difficult.”
United could make late swoop for Gakpo
United have been very active during the final days of the transfer window, and it was expected after the horrendous start to the season with back-to-back losses.
The recent £85 million deal to sign Antony will take their spending spree to over £200m, but there could be more signings before the transfer window closes on Thursday.
The Brazilian is a specialist right-winger, who should provide quality competition to Jadon Sancho, and we may see Gakpo brought in to reinforce the left-wing department.
Furthermore, the attacker’s arrival could also see Marcus Rashford given a more frequent role as the main striker while competing with Anthony Martial and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Gakpo is also capable of leading the line on his own. We won’t be completely surprised if his arrival coincides with Ronaldo’s exit. Erik ten Hag is now open to selling him.
PSV recently failed to qualify for the Champions League, and they are still holding out for £42m for Gakpo. After United’s huge outlay on Antony, PSV may stay firm on their price.
