Bastian Schweinsteiger has been urged to give “serious consideration” to a move to Manchester United by German one of the all time greats of German football, Lothar Matthaus.
The 30-year-old cast doubts over his future at the Allianz Arena when he suggested he was in no hurry to sign a new deal with the Bundesliga champions, despite having only 12 months remaining on his current contract, fuelling speculations that he could be set for a move away from Bavaria in the summer.
United have been linked with a move for the World Cup winner more than once over the last few seasons and with Louis Van Gaal looking to bolster his midfield options this summer, Schweinsteiger was reportedly among the names on the United manager’s list.
The Dutchman played a pivotal role in the 30-year-old’s career as he converted the Bayern man from a promising winger into a dominant central midfielder, a role in which Schweinsteiger has excelled for club and country over the last decade.
Matthaus, a former Bayern player himself, said he believes Schweinsteiger would benefit from reuniting with his former manager, after a season during which the German has failed to nail down a regular starting spot as Pep Guardiola opted to deploy Xabi Alonso as his midfield lynchpin.
“Schweinsteiger needs a coach that will play him according to his strengths and Van Gaal will surely do that,” Matthaus told popular German newspaper Bild.
“If there is an offer from Manchester, Bastian should give it serious consideration.”
With Michael Carrick approaching his 34th birthday and United in need to midfield reinforcements, Schweinsteiger would undoubtedly be an excellent signing, although the German could well be using United’s interest purely to earn himself a better contract.
