Scholes: “United won’t win the league next season”

Manchester-United-Premier-League-Winners-ParadePaul Scholes doesn’t believe Manchester United will win challenge for the Premier League title next season, despite having all but ensured a return to Champions League football in Louis Van Gaal’s first season.

Having secured the signing of PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay, United are expected to spend big again in the summer, but Scholes believes they should focus on cementing a place in the top four as the title might be a step too far next season.

“I’d be looking at Champions League again for next year,” he told popular United YouTube channel FullTimeDEVILS. “I think it’s probably a bit early to challenge for the league.”

“We know Chelsea will buy two or three players and you have to say they have been a long way ahead this year.

“Arsenal look good apart from Monday night and if they buy a couple I don’t think they will be far away. You have to say City will spend a lot of money as well so there’s a lot of catching up to be done.”

The former United midfielder added that United needed to replace the defenders who departed last summer, as the current back four was too unexperienced and injury prone.

“When you look at Patrice Evra, Nemaja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, in their prime they were fit every week,” he said.

“You look now and wonder who the back four is going to be.

“Jonny Evans is injured or suspended, Phil Jones is always injured, Chris Smalling has had a good run lately but still can pick up the odd injury.”
