Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has slammed the performance of Anthony Martial following the Red Devils’ 1-1 Premier League draw against Everton at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils had the opportunity to register a third league win on the bounce but that was not the case as they settled for a frustrating stalemate against the Toffees.
Speaking after the game, Giggs was particularly unimpressed with the reaction of Martial on the playing field and believes the Frenchman looked ‘casual’ and ‘lethargic’ as the club were searching for the winning goal.
“He is talented, and he’s not a bad kid, but the problem he has is that he looks lethargic all the time. He looks casual, as if he’s not bothered,” he told on the Premier League’s matchday coverage via Goal.com.
“When it comes off, and he’s doing brilliant things, you say it just comes naturally. But when it’s not, you think: he’s not running, he’s not trying, he’s not working hard enough, he’s not holding the ball up.”
The 46-year-old added that Martial’s position could be under threat during the forthcoming matches, particularly with young graduate Mason Greenwood finding the net in recent games for the club.
“With Mason coming on and doing that, getting in positions to score goals, he [Martial] is going to be under pressure, because he’s not giving you anything defensively and he’s not giving you anything offensively either,” he added.
Martial was impressive in the Manchester derby last weekend where he was influential on the counter-attack and managed to grab the club’s second goal in the 2-1 triumph at the Etihad Stadium.
However, he has been hugely disappointing in the past two games in all competitions, where he has failed to muster a single shot on target and has likewise failed to win a single aerial duel.
The Frenchman’s position won’t be under threat in the immediate term and he needs to show an improvement in the forthcoming games or else, he could be axed from the starting lineup.
