Ruud van Nistelrooy ‘slightly disappointed’ after lacklustre attacking display vs Chelsea

Manchester United and Chelsea battled to a lacklustre 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty after Robert Sanchez fouled Rasmus Hojlund inside the box.

Moises Caicedo was the best player on the pitch and levelled the score with a stunning equaliser.

Ruud van Nistelrooy believed his players reacted well and could have won the game.

He said after the game (via BBC Sport): “It was a very good performance. The players did really well and fought in every inch of the pitch. It was very good to watch that bit.

“The chances we created, we could have scored one more to win the game. It was a shame we couldn’t. I’m slightly disappointed we didn’t win.

“It’s an emotional rollercoaster – it’s been almost a full week where so many things happened. My job was to steady the ship. The players reacted very well – something to build on in the next two games.

“I came here to help the club in any capacity. After these two games that will continue and hopefully it can work out.”

Van Nistelrooy must improve United’s finishing skills

The Red Devils have been grappling with significant goalscoring struggles this season.

Alejandro Garnacho squandered several golden opportunities to find the back of the net, with at least a couple of chances begging to be converted.

Despite registering two shots on target, neither was struck cleanly, leaving him frustrated on the night.

Bruno Fernandes made a good run in the penalty area on the hour mark, cutting the ball back for Garnacho.

The Argentina international showcased great movement to shake off the Chelsea defender, but his weak first-time shot went straight to Sanchez.

He had another opportunity earlier, but his drilled shot from the left was way off target.

Garnacho could have won the game in the 89th minute, but his acrobatic shot went over the crossbar.

Fernandes had the chance to score his second goal a few moments later, but he smashed wildly into the Stretford End.

United demonstrated their goalscoring woes against West Ham United last week. They should have netted at least three goals in the first half but ended up scoring none.

Van Nistelrooy was a prolific striker during his playing days. It is his primary job to make the players more productive in the final third.

He has aspirations to continue after Ruben Amorim’s arrival and must help his forwards become more clinical over the next couple of games.
