Ruud van Nistelrooy provides fresh injury update for Leicester City game

Manchester United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has provided a fresh injury update ahead of the Premier League clash against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways on Thursday night with a 2-0 triumph over PAOK in the Europa League. The performance was far from impressive, but they picked up their maiden win in the new league phase.

Van Nistelrooy has fared well on temporary charge with two wins and one draw. The Foxes game on Sunday will be his final assignment before Ruben Amorim takes control as the permanent head coach.

Ahead of the game, the Dutchman has provided an update on multiple players. Van Nistelrooy revealed that Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro are back on the training pitch, but they are unlikely to make the game.

He told reporters: “Yesterday we had a lot of benefit from Christian playing 30 mins with Ugarte and Mason making his first minutes again, so glad they are back and for a little bit of a longer future that Luke and Leny are on the pitch.”

The 48-year-old added that Amad Diallo has been examined after his minor knock yesterday and the onus is on getting him fit for Sunday’s encounter, he added: “Amad has been examined, and we continue to work so that he is ready for Sunday.”

When pressed on Kobbie Mainoo’s fitness, Van Nistelrooy highlighted that he is also progressing well with his muscle injury, but he needs more time before rejoining his teammates in regular training.

He said: “Kobbie [Mainoo] is also progressing with his injury. He isn’t yet with the team, though. He needs more time.”

United are unbeaten since the departure of Erik ten Hag from the dug-out. They have the opportunity to continue the good run against the Foxes at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils comfortably beat them in the Carabao Cup fourth round by a 5-2 scoreline, but the Foxes made wholesale changes. The upcoming game won’t be straightforward.

United will be huge favourites to beat the Midlands outfit, but Steve Cooper’s side have the quality in their frontline to challenge the Red Devils defence on the counter-attack.

The faithful will be hoping that United can come on top with a victory before the international break.

The club are six points adrift of the top four and have the opportunity to reduce the deficit.
