Ruben Amorim makes demand for ‘proper’ left-back after Ipswich draw

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has told the hierarchy to sign a ‘proper’ left-back following the 1-1 Premier League draw against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The Red Devils shared the spoils against the Tractor Boys in Amorim’s first game in charge. They made a perfect start with a goal inside two minutes but failed to add to their tally.

The hosts grew in confidence as the game progressed and equalised just before the break. Ipswich were the better side in the second half, and Andre Onana made some key saves.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Amorim wants the club to sign a new left-back next year.

Romano said: “Man Utd want to go for a proper left-back. Ruben Amorim is very happy with Diogo Dalot as a player.

“He’s professional, can play several positions – a top leader and big professional. So, he’s very happy with Diogo Dalot.

“But, they need a player who can cover that position on a regular basis. Obviously, Dalot can play on the right. That’s his position actually – he is only helping on the left.

“And so, a new player in that position, a left-back remains a top priority. From what I’m hearing, even after the Ipswich game, the message from Ruben Amorim to Manchester United management is that we need a player in that position in 2025.

“It could be in January, could be in the summer. It is based on opportunities, based on price, based on several factors. But, Manchester United want to go for a player in that position.”

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies are reportedly the candidates United are considering.

Amorim’s request is bad news for Shaw or Malacia

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are the specialist left-back options in the squad, but both of them have been sidelined with injuries since the start of the campaign.

Shaw and Malacia are not far from returning to first-team action, but Amorim’s desire to land another left-back could lead to one of them leaving the club soon.

Amorim prefers to operate with a 3-4-2-1 system with wing-backs, but it appears he is looking for a solid left-back who can balance things defensively and offensively.

Kerkez and Davies are two names on the club’s radar, but the latter would be a dream signing, considering his vast European experience and big reputation.

Davies plays as a left-back for Bayern, but he is generally a winger on Canada duty.

His versatile ability would perfectly suit the left wing-back position. The ‘world-class‘ star could be available on a free transfer with his contract expiring next summer.

The big question is whether United can persuade Davies to join them with a lucrative salary package. Champions League qualification could be key to convincing him.
