Manchester United legend Roy Keane has urged the club to move on from goalkeeper David de Gea despite him winning the Premier League Golden Glove award.
The Spain international received his accolade on Sunday after securing 17 clean sheets in the top-flight campaign, three more than Alisson, Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale.
Despite the award, Keane was not entirely pleased with De Gea and added that the club are unlikely to win regular trophies with the 32-year-old between the sticks.
The former United captain believes the club should part ways with the former Atletico graduate, who has been prone to making too many mistakes over recent years.
He told Sky Sports (via Football Daily): “Manchester United had to improve defensively from last year because they were so bad.”
“They’re all patting De Gea on the back there. I’d move him on quickly. He wouldn’t be for me, he’s not going to get Manchester United back winning trophies, absolutely not.
“The idea that the players are patting him on the back is ridiculous, that’s his job.
“No, you wouldn’t keep him as a No. 2. He wouldn’t want that, he wouldn’t stay for that.
“He’s done okay, he’s won a few Player of the Year awards – but what big deal is that? It’s about what the team is achieving.
“I think he’s made far too many mistakes over the years. He was trying to leave the club for a few years ago and go to Real Madrid.”
De Gea likely to remain United’s number one next season
De Gea has had a mixed campaign with the Red Devils. He has made four errors leading to goals this season which is not acceptable.
The Spaniard has also been guilty of giving away possession with his passing from the back. His teammates have saved his blushes.
Despite this, De Gea continues to earn the support from manager Erik ten Hag, considering he has delivered stand-out displays too.
The shot-stopper has secured key points for United with some world-class saves. This quality has earned him the respect of the supporters.
De Gea is currently on the cusp of signing a new contract. He looks set to continue as the number one for a 13th year at United next season.
Based on his performances, Ten Hag may decide whether or not to pursue a younger replacement with better distribution and keeping skills.
