Roy Keane names Diego Simeone as his dream replacement for Ruben Amorim at Man United

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has named his preferred replacement of Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

The 54-year-old has backed current Atletico Madrid manager Diego Someone to succeed at United.

He said on the recent episode of The Overlap: “If the managerial role ever opened up, I’ve always said I’d love to see Diego Simeone take it.

“He’d cause havoc but havoc in a good way. His style of play would fit perfectly, and he’s not as defensive as people think.”

Amorim has been under intense pressure after a nightmare start to the 2025-26 season.

After limping to a 15th-place Premier League finish last season, the Portuguese coach was expected to spark a turnaround.

However, three defeats in his first seven league matches have only tightened the scrutiny on his position.

He recently marked his 50th game in charge of United, yet just 19 wins in that time is hardly a record to celebrate.

Simeone has built a fearsome reputation since taking charge of Atletico Madrid in December 2011.

Over 14 years in the Spanish capital, he has delivered two La Liga titles, two Europa League crowns and a Copa del Rey.

From 749 matches in charge, the Argentine has racked up 442 victories, losing only 144.

Known for his ironclad philosophy, Simeone’s football is built first and foremost on defensive solidity.

His teams are notoriously hard to break down but it comes at the expense of attacking flair.

Keane’s admiration may stem from Simeone’s fiery personality and ruthless, no-nonsense approach to dressing room management.

He would make it clear from day one that he runs the show, just as Sir Alex Ferguson once did.

However, lack of trophies over a decade-and-a-half shows that his philosophy has a ceiling of success and may not deliver silverware in England.

United fans were left deflated by the football under Mourinho, and Simeone’s approach might risk the same.
