Few players have divided public opinion in recent years like Wayne Rooney.
Love him or loathe him – the latter a feeling experienced by his own fans only 18 months ago – there’s no question that the boy from Croxteth is probably England’s most talented footballer since Gazza, minus the heavy burden of alcohol addiction.
As I have previously and clearly expressed through some of my contribution to Red Rants, since last season I classify myself as a “Rooney skeptical“, but even I must admit that he has gone some way towards regaining my esteem which, I am sure, matters a great deal to him!
So when a friend of mine decided that it was a great idea to present me with a giant Fathead wall graphic of United’s number 10, instead of dismissing his gift as utterly ridiculous, I began to consider a suitable space in my flat to place the master piece!
Needless to say my girlfriend wasn‘t happy at all and despite my best efforts to reassure her that I didn’t intend to follow Wayne’s example in terms of conducting my private life, she delivered an ultimatum then came to a compromise-of-sorts; based on which I will have to keep the poster hidden away in my boys room (which I thought was an interesting analogy to Rooney’s form for United last season – a wonderful thing which ultimately proved futile).
What’s the point of having a life-size poster of arguably the club’s best player if one can’t proudly display it? Likewise, how frustrating can it be to score 27 goals in 32 league appearances in the league only to lose the title on goal difference?
For all my skepticism, which, in fairness, had been slightly waving since the hat-trick against West Ham, the title-clincher at Blackburn and the goal against Barcelona, it’s impossible to ignore Rooney’s contribution to the cause last season as he scored 34 times in 43 games, equaling his season’s best tally registered in 2010-11 (curiously enough, United missed out on the Premier League and Champions League in both seasons) and becoming only the fourth player in United’s history to score more than 180 goals for the club.
But not even 181 goals in 365 appearances in little less than eight seasons, just 68 short of Sir Bobby’s record, were enough to convince my other half that the poster was worth a place in our living room.
In fairness to her, it is a gigantic piece of work (I suspect that in Stockport it would be considered “massive”) at 4’3″wide and 6’4″high but, with United seemingly keen to spend this summer and Scholesy and Giggsy entering their last season at Old Trafford, Rooney could become an ever more crucial figure from next season. So if you fancy this Fathead Wall Graphic, simply enter Red Rants’ Summer of Give-aways competition and you could be the lucky winner.
