Rooney: “Derby a massive game of pride”

Manchester-United-v-Tottenham (1)Wayne Rooney has described the Manchester derby as “a massive game of pride” ahead of Sunday’s all-Mancunian fixture against City at Old Trafford.

United have won just two of their last nine derbies, with only of those wins coming at Old Trafford, but arrive into Sunday’s game as the in-form side in the league, having won their last five league games, while City have fallen a point behind Louis Van Gaal’s men.

With both teams in the race for a Champions League spot, this weekend’s game could take on an even greater meaning but Rooney stressed the Manchester derby is a special game regardless of where the two teams are in the table.

“I think it’s a very important game for Manchester United and Manchester City… for the fans and, for me, it’s a massive game of pride,” Rooney told United’s website.

“You play for Man United, you want to win these derby games.

“We want to give United fans something to smile about when they go to work on Monday morning, we want them to be the ones to be able to give out the banter to Manchester City fans at work.”
