Romelu Lukaku enjoyed a dream debut for Manchester United on Sunday as the £75 million summer signing scored a brace in a 4-0 trashing of West Ham to open our 2017-18 Premier League account.
The Belgian first fired past Joe Hart at his near post following an excellent defence-splitting pass from Marcus Rashford who had been played in down the left wing by a tremendous interception from Nemanja Matic on the halfway line.
Lukaku added a second on 52 minutes to all-but seal the game against a Hammers side who only had one shot on target throughout the 90 minutes and that was straight down the middle from 20 yards.
The 24-year-old’s second goal came from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross from a free kick, heading home from close range after being left unmarked by defender Arthur Masuaku.
In the process, Lukaku has joined Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp on the all-time Premier League top scorers chart with 87 goals. The former-Netherlands star accomplished this in 11 seasons with the Gunners whilst our new striker is only just beginning his sixth full season in the English top flight.
At the age of 24, it’s not impossible that Lukaku won’t overtake Alan Shearer at the top of the all-time scorers’ list. Shearer scored 260 Premier League goals throughout this career. Seven seasons of scoring 25+ would take Lukaku beyond Shearer’s mark at the age of 31.
Former-United players above Lukaku on the chart are Wayne Rooney (199), Andrew Cole (187), Michael Owen (150), Teddy Sheringham (146), Robin van Persie (144), Dwight Yorke (123), Dion Dublin (111), Ryan Giggs (109), Paul Scholes (107), Ruud van Nistlerooy (95), Dimitar Berbatov (94) and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (91).
The top 40 is as follows:
