Roma to convince Manchester United to sell defender for €16-17m

Chris Smalling’s one year spell at Roma was brilliant. The 30-year-old managed to make 37 appearances and was a key cog in Roma’s defense. He made 7 tackles+interceptions+clearances per 90. [WhoScored]

It could be said that this was the most consistent version of Chris Smalling we’ve ever seen. It is a no brainer for Roma to sign the English international on a permanent basis. However, Roma’s efforts have been in vain.

Roma’s pursuit for Smalling was interrupted with Newcastle United and several other English clubs’ interest in the center-half.

II Tempo (via Sport Witness) claims that the Romans have resurrected interest in him and CEO Guido Fienga wants to sign Smalling on a permanent deal.

The report also mentions that Roma have added a new agent and negotiator to the cast to re-initiate the talks and are ready to spend in the region of €16m-€17m. The Red Devils are not looking to lower their €20m asking price honoring interest from Fulham, West Ham, and others. Roma, on the other hand, are counting on the player’s desire to return to Italy.

Smalling wrote to his fans on Twitter that he’s very interested in returning at the Italian capital and wants to improve at the club.

“I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season.”, he mentioned.

Smalling is a better option than existing Roma’s defensive options- Juan Jesus, Federico Fazio and Gianluca Mancini. United could play hardball but its best if they let Smalling go.
