Roma eyeing deal for Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Serie A giants Roma could make an approach to sign Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer, Gazzetta dello Sport (today’s edition, page 10) claims.

Wan-Bissaka started last season as the undisputed right-back for United, but he was displaced by Diogo Dalot at the turn of the year. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick preferred the better attacking attributes of the Portugal international.

Erik ten Hag has also been tipped to pick Dalot over Wan-Bissaka for the same reason. There is already talk that the former Crystal Palace graduate could be offloaded.

Amidst this, Gazzetta report that Jose Mourinho’s side could be interested. The former United boss is eyeing a strong competitor to Rick Karsdorp for the next campaign.

Wan-Bissaka still has two years remaining on his contract, but could be prised away for around €30 million (£25.5m). United seem to be already eyeing a new right-back.

Our view:

Wan-Bissaka has been known for his strong defensive qualities. He is undoubtedly one of the best tacklers in the Premier League when he is up for the challenge.

The 24-year-old averaged an impressive 2.5 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per game last term, but did not provide much in an attacking sense. His distribution was also not up to the mark.

Dalot did not fare much better either. He averaged 2.2 tackles and 1.2 interceptions while completing similar percentage of passes (80). However, he was more willing to push forward.

His progressive passing and desire to make early crosses into the box gave him the edge under Rangnick. Dalot looks set to continue at United next term, but Ten Hag may want an upgrade.

Meanwhile, Wan-Bissaka could be perfectly suited for Italian football which is more tactical and less intense. His defensive qualities could make him a top signing for the Giallorossi next term.

We have already seen former United star Chris Smalling become an important figure in Roma’s defence. Wan-Bissaka could have a similar impact if he joins the Europa Conference League champions.
