Robson: “Rooney must play up-front”

Rooney-of-Manchester-United-celebrates-scoring-their-third-goal-during-the-Barclays-Premier-League-match-betweenBryan Robson has said Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s best attacking option and that he wants to see the England captain leading the line at Anfield on Sunday.

Rooney scored United’s third goal against Spurs on the weekend,  his 14th goal in his last 14th appearances at Old Trafford, as Louis Van Gaal’s men swept one of their direct rival for a top four finish aside, delivering arguably their best performance of the season.

Having temporarily silenced the critics, United face a testing trip to Liverpool as the race for a spot in next season’s Champions League enters a crucial stage and the former United captain believes Rooney must be deployed up-front if the reds are to emerge on top against their main rivals.

“I like to see Wayne Rooney up-front,” said Robson.

“What I like about Wayne being back up there is that he can always create a goal and he can always score a goal. I think that’s where he is more dangerous.

“When he goes into midfield, he forgets about scoring and wants to link passes together.

“He hits great passes, but he forgets that from midfield you can score a goal as well. So that is why I like to see him up front.”

Robson insisted he was confident United could pip Arsenal and Manchester City to a second place finish, as long as they got a positive result at Anfield on Sunday.

“If we don’t get beat at Anfield, we will have set ourselves up to maybe finish second because we have City at home and Arsenal at home,” he said.
