Rio: “There were times United were boring under Fergie”

Manchester-United-v-Swansea-City-Premier-LeagueRio Ferdinand has admitted that Manchester United were a pragmatic side under Sir Alex Ferguson, although they showed more ambition than the current team.

Speaking about the criticism Louis Van Gaal has received this season for what many perceive to be a too rigid and defensive brand of football, Ferdinand revealed United were more concerned with substance than style during Ferguson’s final seasons, but were an altogether more ambitious side.

“When I was a player my main aim was to win a trophy first and win it playing exciting football second, and that seems to be Van Gaal’s too,” Ferdinand wrote his Sun column.

“Certainly during the final three seasons under Sir Alex it was more a case of us getting over the line than anything cavalier.

“However, there was certainly a lot more ambition and threat in our play than there is currently with United.

“United knew what they were getting when they employed Louis van Gaal, so there can be no complaints now.”
