Manchester United legend-turned-pundit Rio Ferdinand believes David Beckham will come with a consortium to takeover the club from The Glazer family.
The Glazers recently confirmed that United are up for sale and there has since been speculation linking some of the biggest business magnates and companies with the club.
Former United star Beckham has also been associated with a possible takeover. While he may not have the funds, a consortium led by him could attempt to take control.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “Becks will come with a consortium.”
“I saw Becks last night at the game, I went to the England game, and we were sat next to each other. When you mention someone like Becks’ name, he’s obviously a part-owner of Inter Miami, but he doesn’t come on his own.
“It’s not his money. It’s not him in terms of putting his hand in his pocket. He comes with a consortium. He comes with people who do have deep pockets who have the ability to go and execute on a deal like that.
“So that’s the way he’ll be approaching it, and rightly so. I just think it’s going to come down to a number. If you’ve got the number, and you can produce, that’s what it’s going to be about.”
Ferdinand added that the new owners should look into appointing former players into key positions in the board and highlighted the work done by Edwin van der Sar and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge with Ajax and Bayern Munich respectively.
He added: “When you look at it, the clubs that are successful over big periods of time have players that have worn the shirt, understand the traditions, understand the history, understand the ethos of the football club, and continue that.”
“Ajax with Edwin van der Sar, Bayern Munich have Rummenigge in there among others, Real Madrid, Barca – they all do it. I think that’s an area that the new owners that potentially come in have to really look at.”
Man Utd need the right owner/consortium after the Glazers
The Glazers have been hugely criticised for their lack of investment into the club. While they have spent decent sums of money in the transfer market, the infrastructure has not improved.
Old Trafford and the training facilities have remained in the same state for years and there needs to be a significant outlay to catch up with the demands of the fans as well as players.
Beckham, who is currently the co-owner of Inter Miami, will have good contacts across the United States, but the big question is whether he can find the right consortium for United.
The Glazers have been known for taking dividends half-yearly. The fans would not want another consortium from the United States who are primarily focused on making profits.
Hence, the club need owners with the willingness to invest into the club. If United want to hire club legends for key positions, it should be based on their expertise over popularity.
