Manchester United had a forgettable start to the Premier League season with back-to-back losses in August and there were plenty of fan protests in the lead-up to the Liverpool game at Old Trafford.
Some of the club’s faithful were not pleased with the limited investment from the Glazers and there was a response right before the derby with United introducing Casemiro to the fans at the stadium.
What followed was a brilliant counter-attacking display from United. It took just 16 minutes to open the scoring. Jadon Sancho showed some lovely quick feet in the box before a composed finish.
Shortly after the break, United scored with another stunning counter attack. Substitute Anthony Martial put Rashford through on goal from the halfway line. He easily slotted his effort in the bottom left corner.
Mohamed Salah pulled one goal back for the Reds in the 81st minute but it was only a consolation as United’s backline stood firm. The victory was definitely a turnaround moment for the Red Devils.
After poor losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, manager Erik ten Hag showed the willingness to adapt and played to his players’ strengths which was counter-attacking football at that point.
Roy Keane and Gary Neville were certainly left mesmerized by the stunning win.
United have become a more possession based outfit as the season has progressed. They should go into Sunday’s Premier League meeting at Anfield with full confidence to pick up maximum points.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have not conceded in the last four league outings and it has been against inferior opposition. Their last big game was against Real Madrid in Europe where they lost 5-2 at Anfield.
Hence, the Merseyside outfit are there for the taking. United have not won in the league at Anfield since January 2016 but should fancy their prospects of ending the dreadful streak this weekend.
Sunday’s game is a potential must-win for United in the title race. Arsenal are 11 points ahead of them at the top of the table. They could go 14 points clear with a win against Bournemouth on Saturday.
United will obviously have two games in hand over the Gunners but victory is a must against their fierce rivals this weekend to keep their slim hopes alive of catching the north London side for the top spot.
