Report: Manchester United linked to €25m Brazilian midfielder

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Famalicao’s Gustavo Assuncao, while Premier League clubs Everton and Wolves are interested too. Assuncao could cost €25m and he can leave Famalicao in January or next summer [source: AS].

Assuncao arrived in Portugal last year and captains his side. He’s made over 40 appearances for the Portuguese side as a defensive midfielder. The 20-year-old is the son of former Atletico Madrid midfielder Paulo Assuncao.

A concerning factor in Gustavo’s playing style is how reckless he can be at times, although this might be a factor of the role he is assigned and the needs of his team. Nevertheless, he gives away way too many fouls (2.1 per 90) and has been carded 4 times in 8 appearances this season [source: WhoScored]

He is a midfielder who can recycle possession and keep the ball ticking, averaging 54 passes per 90 mins. His offensive output is low but he’s usually the link between defense to midfield.

Premier League recently passed a rule which prevents clubs from making more than three foreign singings of players aged 18-21. Assuncao falls into this category and rumours will link him to many more clubs as his reputation continues to go up.

United needs a replacement for Nemanja Matic. But, we know very little about Assuncao right now. Better alternatives in Eduardo Camavinga and Denis Zakaria are available to Red Devils.
