Report: Dean Henderson will not replace David de Gea as the no.1

Dean Henderson returned from a year-long loan spell at Sheffield United bidding them goodbye. The Blades finished eighth in the Premier League- a new record for them. Henderson played a major role between the sticks as Sheffield conceded only 39 goals- the fourth-best in the league.

Henderson believes that after having a breakthrough debut Premier League season, he can stake a claim at the No.1 spot in Manchester United’s first team. According to Manchester Evening News, he will sign a new contract only if he’s given the first-team playtime. His current contract runs until June 2022.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his goalkeeping staff believe that David de Gea is still the no.1 choice and Henderson requires more experience to establish a first-team spot at United.

Both the United keepers managed to keep 13 clean sheets and conceded about the same amount of goals last season. Statistically, they are similar but Henderson has an edge over de Gea in distribution.

All things point towards de Gea being the No.1 and Henderson going out on loan again. After his goodbye message, it is clear he is not going back to Bramall Lane. United does not have a tendency to sell/loan out players to their direct rivals. It is evident Henderson will find himself in a foreign league if Solskjaer doesn’t change his mind.
