Manchester United are hot on the heels of signing Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho this summer, with recent reports suggesting the England international will be available cheaper than before the COVID-19 outbreak.
The 20-year-old had been tearing it up in Germany this season prior to the league’s suspension. Though he came off the bench to record another assist today in Dortmund’s 2-0 win away to Wolfsburg. Sancho now has an incredible 14 goals and 16 assists in 25 Bundesliga appearances (21 starts) this season.
However, should we be unsuccessful in our chase for the highly-rated attacker, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees fellow Brit Rabbi Matondo as his alternative.
The 19-year-old Welshman only joined Schalke 04 from Manchester City in January 2019 and has started to establish himself in the first team this season – making eight starts and five substitute appearances. He played 45 minutes in their 4-0 hammering at Borussia Dortmund as the Bundesliga restarted last weekend.
Solskjaer’s three Manchester United signings last summer were all British – Daniel James, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with many feeling he will continue to build a British squad again this summer.
If so, it is realistic that Matondo could be the alternate option to Sancho, particularly as the boss hasn’t settled on a right winger during his time in charge. How much we would need to pay for him remains to be seen though, but his release clause has now been revealed.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Rabbi Matono would be available for €60 million (£52.5m) to us, but the report goes on to state that Manchester City would only need to pay €46.5 million (£40.5m) for the teenager, due to a clause in the deal that took him to Germany from the Etihad Stadium 16 months ago.
Whether the club would demand such a fee is unlikely given that so far he is only potential and has yet to hold down a regular first team place in David Wagner’s side. One also has to wonder if Pep Guardiola would be interested in re-signing a player he let go not so long ago.
Rabbi Matondo offers electric pace down the right wing; something we already have plenty of with Daniel James and Marcus Rashford in attack. Though this would further add to our counter-attacking threat, which has been impressive under the Norwegian manager.
Whilst I wouldn’t mind the signing of Matondo at Old Trafford this summer, we should go all out to get Jadon Sancho to join Manchester United.
