Reds shine in World Cup qualifiers

Yesterday’s World Cup qualifiers were a mixed bag for United players, with Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie on the scoresheet, while Jonny Evans was sent off for Northern Ireland.

At Wembley, Rooney scored England’s first goal as Roy Hodgson’s men thumped Montenegro 4-1, with Rooney and Danny Welbeck putting in a good performance, while Michael Carrick came off the bench in the second half.

Rooney’s strike partner, Robin Van Persie, might have not enjoyed the form of his life at United in recent weeks, but the Dutchman turned on the style last night as Holland thrashed Hungary 8-1, with RVP scoring a hat-trick.

Van Persie’s three goals mean he’s now Holland’s all-time top scorer with 41 goals, while Antonio Valencia provided the assist for Jefferson Montero, who scored the only goal of the game as Ecuador beat Uruguay 1-0.
