Southampton host Manchester United in this weekend’s Premier League clash at St Mary’s, with tickets for this and further Manchester United games available at www.footballticketpad.com.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side were 1-0 winners at pointless Crystal Palace last Saturday lunchtime, whilst we are coming off the back of a 4-0 thrashing of Everton last Sunday and a 4-1 thrashing of Burton Albion in the EFL Cup since Southampton last kicked a ball.
The Argentine manager replaced Claude Puel over the summer for whom we enjoyed much success against last season. Here’s how the results went:
1. Southampton 0-0 Manchester United (17 May 2017)
We had little to play for in this fixture last season as a top four finish was out of sight and we had a Europa League final to prepare for with this being the penultimate game of the season. Southampton were struggling to score at the time but made Sergio Romero work at St Mary’s as the Argentine was forced into six saves.
Continuing from last season, the Saints have now failed to score in seven of their last 10 Premier League matches. Eric Bailly and Phil Jones both played in defence that day and are expected to be our centre-back partnership tomorrow. Wayne Rooney led the line up front with Zlatan Ibrahimovic sidelined.
2. Manchester United 3-2 Southampton (26 February 2017)
The second of three trophies we lifted last season was the EFL Cup at Wembley. After a bright start from the hosts which included Manolo Gabbiadini controversially having a goal disallowed, we raced into a two-goal lead in the first half through strikes from Zlatan and Jesse Lingard. However, the Italian would pull one back in stoppage time and then equalise three minutes into the second half.
With Southampton putting the pressure on our defence for much of the second half, Ibrahimovic came up with the goods to score the winning goal three minutes from time.
3. Manchester United 2-0 Southampton (19 August 2016)
Zlatan Ibrahimovic made it four goals in his first three Manchester United appearances with a brace in our first home game of last season. Following his arrival from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer, the Swedish legend had scored the winner in the FA Community Shield and then the goal that had sealed a 3-1 win at Bournemouth in our Premier League opener.
A goal in either half versus the Saints, which included a majestic strike out of nowhere in the first half, helped us start the season with back-to-back victories.
