Marcus Rashford received a red card in Manchester United’s 4-3 Champions League defeat at FC Copenhagen on Wednesday.
The left winger got his marching orders after a VAR review on his challenge against Elias Jelert in the 42nd minute.
United were 2-0 up at that point, but Rashford’s dismissal caused a huge momentum shift.
The visitors made their numerical superiority count to triumph 4-3 at the Parken Stadium.
The England international will now miss the Red Devils’ Champions League clash with Turkish outfit Galatasaray scheduled to be played on November 29.
The 26-year-old has been in woeful form this season, scoring just once in 15 appearances across all competitions.
Was Rashford’s red card justified?
Rashford’s dismissal caused a huge debate about whether the referee made the right call.
Manager Erik ten Hag described it as a harsh decision that changed everything for United.
But Robbie Savage believed the red card was merited because he stamped on Jelert’s shin and endangered an opponent.
Savage said (h/t Daily Mail): “He’s gone to protect the ball, but as we can see, studs on the shin.
“He’s gone to get his body between the opposition player and the ball, but by doing that, he’s inadvertently stamped on his shin. No complaints, it’s a red card.
“It was endangering an opponent. There’s no way Rashford can stay on after that.”
However, Jamie Carragher completely disagreed with Savage on social media platform X.
We believe Rashford was unlucky to get sent off as his intention was to shield the ball away from Jelert but he inadvertently caught him on the shin.
Rashford missing the Galatasaray game is a blow for United, who are in danger of failing to qualify for the last-16 in the Champions League.
He looked lively prior to his dismissal and his absence gives Ten Hag another unwanted headache in what is becoming a dismal season.
