Raphael Varane stands out for Man Utd in impressive draw at Liverpool

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane produced a man of the match performance during the goalless Premier League draw against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Red Devils were anticipated to have a difficult game against their arch-rivals at Anfield and there were suggestions that they could lose by a comfortable scoreline.

However, nothing of that sort happened. United started nervously in the derby but managed to find their composure and were excellent defensively over 90 minutes.

Varane, who started from the left centre-back position, was a key factor behind the result. The Frenchman was brilliant in clearing his lines and was strong aerially too.

He made a stunning 15 clearances and won 100 per cent of his aerial duels (4/4). The 30-year-old also made three interceptions and blocked two shots on goal.

The World Cup winner undoubtedly delivered his best performance of the campaign and showed that he can comfortably operate from the left centre-back position.

Varane proves a point to manager Erik ten Hag

The £42 million signing was dropped for Harry Maguire in the right centre-back role earlier this season.

Ten Hag said that he is uncomfortable on the left hand side and the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are better equipped for the position.

Many fans were left amazed by the strange choice from the manager and we are happy that Varane has been reinstated into the starting XI, albeit influenced by the injuries.

Varane proved a point to the Red Devils boss with a strong defensive display yesterday and showed why he is a world-class player. He should be a consistent starter hereon.

His future could be decided in the summer. His present deal actually expires in June 2024 but the club have the option to extend for another year with a clause in his contract.
