Raphael Varane likely to leave Man Utd this summer – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane could leave on a free transfer this summer with the club yet to offer him a new contract, according to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Frenchman has been a key player in central defence for United, but he has struggled to stay fit over a prolonged run of games. He is currently out of action with a muscle injury.

Varane is anticipated to return before the end of the campaign, but there are doubts whether he will be at the club next season.

His current £340,000-a-week deal expires at the end of June. As things stand, United have no plans of triggering an extension clause to keep him for another 12 months.

They have not opened talks over a fresh contract either and he could head for the exit door as a free-agent this summer.

Speaking in his Here We Go Podcast, Romano said: “What I’m told is Manchester United haven’t offered a new deal for Raphael Varane.”

“Lets see if they change their mind in the final weeks of the season, otherwise Varane will leave as free agent in the summer.”

Varane could leave United this summer

Varane, who has been described as ‘world-class‘ by Rio Ferdinand, has impressed for United with several stand-out displays.

However, he has failed to stay unscathed over an extended period. His knack for picking up injuries has been a big concern.

As a result, the club are reluctant to extend his stay on his current wages. There are no plans of discussing fresh terms either.

In our view, the hierarchy are likely to release him at the end of the season. They could sign a young centre-back as his successor.

Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is reportedly one of the top targets for the club amid his huge progress with the Toffees this campaign.
