Raphael Varane impresses for Man Utd in Manchester derby defeat

Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane delivered a solid performance during the 3-1 Premier League derby defeat to Manchester City.

The Red Devils suffered a second consecutive league loss on Sunday, but there were some positives to carry forward from the Etihad Stadium.

Marcus Rashford answered critics with a stunning long-range goal to open the scoring in the eighth minute. He could have easily scored two more.

Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo was solid as usual from the centre of the park. The teenager won 100 per cent of his ground duels and stood tall against Rodri.

Elsewhere in defence, Varane had another stand-out showing. He kept the City attack at bay with as many as nine clearances, losing possession just thrice.

He had one forgettable moment against Haaland in the first half, but the World Cup winner was assured at the back with a 90 per cent pass accuracy, winning 100% of his aerial duels.

United should negotiate fresh deal for Varane

Varane’s current £350,000-a-week contract expires at the end of June and United’s hierarchy have decided against triggering a one-year extension clause.

No talks are planned at the current point of time, but we believe the club should propose a new long-term deal with a reasonable pay-cut on his wages.

On his day, the £34 million signing is undoubtedly one of the best in the world. His fitness record may not be perfect, but he is one of United’s leading centre-back.

Hopefully, there will be progress over contract talks in the coming weeks. A new deal could also be in the pipeline for Jonny Evans who has exceeded expectations.

The 36-year-old looked assured alongside Varane at the heart of the defence and was unfortunately taken off after the hour mark, having been playing with an injury.
