Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is doing individual training away from the main group ahead of Thurday’s Europa League clash against Omonia.
The Frenchman picked up a minor ankle injury in the Manchester derby defeat earlier this month and subsequently missed the European trip to Cyprus.
He made his comeback during the final minute of the Premier League match against Everton, but could now be rested for tomorrow’s game versus Omonia.
According to journalist Simon Peach, the centre-back is currently undergoing individual training sessions away from his teammates preparing to face Neil Lennon’s side.
Varane could return to starting XI against Newcastle United
Victor Lindelof accompanied manager Erik ten Hag in today’s early press conference. This has provided a confirmation that the Swede will be starting in central defence tomorrow with Lisandro Martinez.
In that case, Varane should probably be on the bench or rested altogether. In our opinion, the latter could happen as the World Cup winner has been working away from the main group.
Ten Hag recently saw Anthony Martial pick up a hip injury on his return to the starting line-up and may want to handle Varane with extra caution, considering his injury record lately.
Hence, he would not want to risk him unless he is fully fit. The £43.2 million-rated star should use today’s individual session to step up his fitness such that he can make the line-up this weekend.
United have a crucial period ahead after the Omonia clash. They are set to face Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in the space of one week which could define their league season.
