New Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has reportedly blocked Diogo Dalot’s loan move to Roma as per CalcioMercato.
Rangnick reportedly sees the versatile Portuguese defender as a potential long-term solution for the right-back position at Old Trafford.
Dalot has made just 27 Premier League appearances for Man United since arriving from Porto for a reported fee of £19 million in summer 2018.
However, since taking charge of the Red Devils in November, Rangnick has handed the 22-year-old a couple of top-flight starts, more than throughout Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was the Norwegian’s preferred choice, but a series of underwhelming performances have seen the English right-back come under scrutiny.
He has missed the last few games through injury, but as it seems, he’ll have to work his socks off to fight his way back into United’s starting line-up.
Dalot showed glimpses of his potential during a season-long loan at AC Milan last term, but the Italians failed to sign him permanently due to a lack of funds.
The Portugal international returned to Old Trafford and found his first-team opportunities at a premium under Solskjaer.
Rangnick’s recent actions suggest Dalot could be having a future in Manchester despite Roma’s interest in bringing the youngster back to Serie A.
Jose Mourinho, who was at the helm when Dalot arrived from Porto, is reportedly hell-bent on reuniting with his former protege amidst concerns regarding Leonardo Spinazzola’s return to the fold.
The high-rated full-back was an absolute beast at Euro 2020 before picking up a horrific injury, though Italy eventually went on to win the tournament, beating England in the grand final.
Spinazzola’s eye-catching showings in the summer attracted a host of high-profile suitors.
However, the Italian’s long-term injury hindered any hope of securing a move away from the Stadio Olimpico while leaving Mourinho short of defensive options.
Although the Special One looked a step away from capturing Dalot’s temporary switch to Rome, it appears he’ll have to turn his attention elsewhere.
