Ralf Rangnick confirms fresh injury blow for Edinson Cavani

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that Edinson Cavani has picked up a fresh injury which is expected to sideline him for the next couple of weeks.

The Uruguayan has experienced an injury-plagued campaign with multiple niggles. He only recently returned from a groin problem to face Tottenham Hotspur, but has been ruled out again.

Cavani sustained a right calf injury during Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against Chile earlier this week, and Rangnick has now formally confirmed that he won’t be fit to face Leicester City.

The German tactician added that the striker could be sidelined for another few weeks, which could be a potential blow for the club in their Champions League qualification pursuit.

He told Manchester Evening News: “Cavani is injured again and will be out for the next couple of weeks.”

Our view:

Cavani has barely played for the Red Devils since January. This has put much of the scoring burden on Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been struggling for form lately.

The Portugal international bagged a stunning hat-trick against Spurs last month, but has only netted four times for the Red Devils during the second half of the campaign.

The 37-year-old will be pivotal to the club’s top-four hopes in the season run-in, but will need more help from the attackers around him including Marcus Rashford.

While Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes have chipped in with goal contributions, Rashford has looked out of sorts in recent weeks, which is a cause for concern.

The England international has led the line on numerous occasions in the past, but his poor form this year has meant that there has been an overreliance on Ronaldo.

Considering Cavani made a slow recovery previously, Rashford and Anthony Elanga may have a role to play up front if Rangnick wishes to rotate. Fernandes could also feature in a false nine position.
