Manchester United have had a quiet start to the summer transfer window and they are yet to make any new signings.
Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has been United’s priority target, but they have been unsuccessful with three offers.
The club are yet to make an improved fourth bid, and there is a possibility that they could pull out of negotiations.
It appears Adrien Rabiot is one of the alternatives. The Athletic have reported that contact has been made with his agent.
The Frenchman came on the cusp of joining United from Juventus last summer, but personal terms were not agreed on.
Rabiot had a terrific 2022/23 season at Juventus with 11 goals and six assists, and this may have revived United’s interest.
The midfielder’s contract expires on June 30. He is currently evaluating a proposal from the Bianconeri to extend his stay.
The Red Devils may need to take action this week in order to persuade the Frenchman to join them on a free transfer.
Meanwhile, United have a big decision to make over David de Gea’s future with his contract expiring on June 30.
The Spaniard has refused to accept a reduced salary of £200,000-a-week to extend, but fresh talks are planned.
United don’t want to keep him on his current £375,000-a-week wages, but could be willing to negotiate a middle fee.
Similar to Rabiot, United face a critical week over De Gea’s future. The Spaniard will be a free agent from Saturday.
There has been no update over the takeover process but one thing is for sure, it won’t impact United’s transfer activity.
Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are the front-runners to buy the club, but an approval could take eight to 10 weeks.
Hence, there may not be any financial boost until late August. Erik ten Hag prefers to do his transfer business early.
He currently has a budget of around £120m, but the Dutch tactician is hoping to recoup £100m from player sales.
