Porto star Diogo Costa wanted by Man Utd, ready to trigger his release clause

Manchester United are prepared to trigger the release clause in the contract of Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa this summer, according to Portuguese publication A Bola.

The Red Devils currently have David de Gea as the undisputed choice between the sticks but manager Erik ten Hag recently said that he cannot guarantee his position next term.

The Dutch tactician insisted that there must be competition for places and A Bola claim that Costa could be on his way to Old Trafford during the upcoming transfer window.

The 23-year-old has reportedly played his final game for Porto. He is ‘expected’ to move to the Premier League with United ready to activate his €75 million buy-out clause.

Costa would be a solid upgrade on De Gea

De Gea has been exceptional with his reflexes in goal this season and he recently won the Premier League Golden Glove award after securing an impressive 17 clean sheets.

Despite this, his position between the sticks may not be certain next term. He is on the verge of penning a new deal but Ten Hag has refused to confirm his starting spot.

This probably means that the Dutchman is looking into the future.

Costa would be a solid upgrade on De Gea. This campaign, the Portuguese has completed 77 per cent of his passes in the league compared to De Gea’s average of 68 per cent.

Meanwhile, he has delivered more long balls (7.3) than the Spaniard (4.8). The 24-year-old has not made any errors leading to goals unlike De Gea, who has had four howlers.

For now, United’s main focus should be on the FA Cup final versus Manchester City. Any decision on De Gea’s contract or a transfer for Costa could be made after the derby.

Erik ten Hag won’t want any distractions ahead of the crunch showdown at the Wembley Stadium.
