Manchester United return from Champions League action on Tuesday night to travel to Southampton on the south coast on Sunday in the Premier League.
We ran out convincing 4-1 winners over Istanbul Basaksehir midweek, allowing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to rest stars Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford early in the second half.
Prior to our match at St Mary’s, the boss has spoken to the media at his pre-match press conference today and given a team news and injury update.
Paul Pogba looks set to miss a third consecutive game since the international break having missed training again this morning. The midfielder picked up an ankle injury whilst away with France earlier in the month.
Fellow central midfielder Scott McTominay was also absent from training, meaning Donny van de Beek could make his first Premier League start after impressing versus the Turkish champions earlier this week.
The boss added that Marcus Rashford, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all have knocks but should be good to start versus the Saints. Ole said:
“Scott and Paul they didn’t train this morning, not on the grass. Very unlikely for the weekend. Marcus, Victor, Aaron should be okay but not 100%. Luke has started rehab on the grass, not with the squad.”
Marcus Rashford played on the right wing midweek before being replaced by Mason Greenwood in the second half. The duo could both start this weekend, along with Anthony Martial, though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Edinson Cavani is available after making his first start in United colours midweek, saying:
“We played on Tuesday then we don’t have game until Sunday so it is strange for us, even gave boys one day off! Both [Van de Beek and Cavani] available to play.”
Victories over Everton and West Bromwich Albion in our last two Premier League outings see us head into the weekend fixtures down in 10th, seven points behind the leaders.
Meanwhile, Southampton are four points ahead of us in fifth.
