Manchester United might have missed the chance to offload Chris Smalling from their ranks as his apparent move to AS Roma is on the cusp of getting failed, reports The Independent.
Reliable journalist John Solano claims that the deal is off and the deal is very unlikely to happen. Serie A’s deadline for transfer is 8 PM UK time.
Chris Smalling joined Roma on a season-long loan deal from United last summer.
His stay at Roma certainly got extended by several weeks after Roma had to play games beyond the regulated period, owing to extended season caused by nearly three-month hiatus following the coronavirus pandemic.
Although Roma tried to conclude the deal earlier in the transfer window, disagreement between both clubs regarding the valuation of the deal brought the deal to an impasse.
Manchester United want to sell Smalling on a permanent basis, and there were talks of a fee being agreed between the interested parties over the last few days.
However, the recent reports have claimed that the Manchester United no.12 might end staying at the red side of Manchester.
AS Roma are now reportedly considering making a loan move for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, with Chelsea, on the other hand, looking for a buyer for the 27-year-old defender.
Should Smalling stay put at Manchester United, he might not get as much regular game time as he would have got in the Roma shirt.
And this might end his dream of playing for England in the European championship next summer.
