Player Ratings: Wolves 1-1 Man Utd

A Ruben Neves wonder goal rescued Wolverhampton Wanderers a point in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Molineux on Monday night.

Anthony Martial had given us a first-half lead following a well-weighted slide through ball from Marcus Rashford inside the penalty area.

The hosts didn’t fire a single shot on target in the first half but equalised 10 minutes into the second half when a corner was fed out to Never who curled a 25-yard effort in off the underside of the crossbar.

Paul Pogba won a penalty midway through the second half but the Frenchman saw his effort saved by Rui Patricio in the Wolves goal.

Here are how our players fared:

David de Gea 6 – David de Gea was well-protected in the first half and didn’t have a chance with Ruben Neves’ sublime equaliser from 25 yards in the second.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 8 – Another excellent performance from our new right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka supported the attack down the right and worked very hard off the ball to win it back when we lost possession in Wolves’ half. Aside from being knocked over by Diogo Jota in the first half the youngster was a rock in defence.

Victor Lindelof 7 – This has the making of an excellent defence with only a wonder goal breaching our back four to start the season.

Harry Maguire 9 – A rock at the back again in only his second appearance for Manchester United. None of our defence could have done anything about Neves’ equaliser and we didn’t allow a single opportunity in open play.

Luke Shaw 6 – Saw a lot of the ball down the left flank but rarely whipped any crosses into the box. Adama Traore did threaten to cause us problems down our left-hand side after being introduced at half-time and finding space left by Luke Shaw.

Scott McTominay 7 – Protected the back four very well alongside Paul Pogba as none of Wolves’ central midfield trio created anything in open play. Lacked any ambition when in possession though.

Paul Pogba 6 – Excellent in winning the second half penalty but couldn’t win the stare down with Rui Patricio as the Portuguese goalkeeper denied Paul Pogba from the spot. Aside from that, Pogba saw a lot of the ball, played some nice long balls but didn’t create a whole lot of chances.

Daniel James 5 – Harshly booked for being tripped up in the first half. It always felt like Daniel James was on the fringes of the game. Couldn’t pick out a teammate with any of his crosses. Did get back to support Aaron Wan-Bissaka in defending.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Picked up two excellent positions in the penalty area in the opening six minutes of the second half – the first was met with an air shot and the second was deflected out of his path. Jesse Lingard didn’t do much else all game and looked tired when substituted in the final 10 minutes.

Marcus Rashford 8 – Ran the Wolves defence ragged in the first half. Whether Marcus Rashford meant his assist or not for Anthony Martial’s opener, he’d previously threatened to create a chance for the French forward with an excellent cross after fooling two defenders. However, the England international did go quiet in the second half.

Anthony Martial 7 – Deployed in the striker’s role, Anthony Martial produced a fine first time finish to give us the lead. The worked the channels well to move defenders out of position as he collected the ball but could have done a better job holding it up.

Substitutes

Juan Mata (10 mins) N/A – Late replacement for Jesse Lingard but saw very little of the ball.

Mason Greenwood (2 mins) N/A – Second late substitute appearance of the season for the teenager but barely enough time to get a touch of the ball.

Andreas Pereira (2 mins) N/A – Replaced Marcus Rashford to play down the left wing for the final couple of minutes.
