Player Ratings: Valencia 2-1 Man Utd

Manchester United concluded this season’s Champions League group stage with a terrible showing in a 2-1 loss at Valencia this evening.

The Spanish side, whom have only scored 12 goals in 15 La Liga games this season, scored a goal in each half as we failed to take advantage of Juventus’ loss in Switzerland which meant we would have won the group with three points this evening. This was a very winnable game for Mourinho’s side, especially when you see Valencia in the La Liga highlights shows.

Here are how our players fared:

Sergio Romero 5 – Little chance with Carlos Soler’s opener that was driven low into Sergio Romero’s far corner and no chance as Phil Jones turned a second past him. The Argentine did well to cut out an opportunity for Santi Mina midway through the second half.

Antonio Valencia 5 – Fortunate to escape a red card in the opening quarter-of-an-hour for a late challenge on Toni Lato that left blood on the Valencia defender. Offered a good out ball down the right wing when pushing on from full-back. Beaten by a cross towards Michy Batshuayi at 0-1 in the first half but the Belgian striker bailed out our captain by missing the excellent opportunity.

Eric Bailly 6 – Harshly booked after half hour for the opposition goalkeeper dropping the ball. Dragged out of position in the build up to Valencia’s second goal. Otherwise Eric Bailly was more than a match for Michy Batshuayi.

Phil Jones 5 – Showed good leadership at the back but some rash decisions too. Turned Denis Cheryshev’s cross into his own net 90 seconds into the second half.

Marcos Rojo 4 – Valencia were attacking at will down the right wing. Carlos Soler really hurt us down the right wing. Saw little support from Andreas Pereira. Replaced at half-time by Ashley Young.

Fred 5 – Lacks defensive nous and that was evident this evening with Valencia attackers running off the Brazilian midfielder inside our half and towards our penalty area.

Marouane Fellaini 6 – Teed up a great opportunity for Paul Pogba towards the end of the first half. Won the ball back in centre midfield several times and won the majority of his aerial battles but was poor in the holding midfield position.

Paul Pogba 5 – Missed a sitter from five yards out towards the end of the first half. Otherwise, threatened the Valencia goal more than any other player and wasn’t too careless in possession. Our slow play did not help Paul Pogba.

Juan Mata 6 – Nice work down the wing with Ashley Young that led to our consolation goal. Juan Mata looked after the ball during the game but didn’t create much else and didn’t test the opposition goalkeeper against his former side.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – No supply up front before being replaced midway through the second half. Mixture of doing a decent job of holding the ball up and carelessly giving it away.

Andreas Pereira 5 – Poor for most of the game in and out of possession. Starting down the left wing Andreas Pereira tucked inside too often and didn’t help our left-back defensively. Produced a nice 30-yard effort in the final 15 minutes that was well saved by Jaume Domenech as the Brazilian came on towards the end.

Substitutes

Ashley Young (45 mins) 5 – We were better defensively down the left after Ashley Young replaced Marcos Rojo at the break, but Valencia eased up in attack after scoring very early in the second half. Supplied Marcus Rashford for our goal.

Marcus Rashford (35 mins) 7 – Looked lively but had little supply in attack as Marcus Rashford came on for Fred in an attacking change with more than half hour to go at 0-2. Scored our consolation in the final five minutes.

Jesse Lingard (22 mins) N/A – Didn’t see too much of the ball nor offer much of a threat after coming on for Romelu Lukaku.
