Player Ratings: Sevilla vs Manchester United (UEFA Europa League semi-final)

Manchester lose 1-2 to Sevilla as the Reds succumb to another semi-final defeat after reaching the same stage in Carabao Cup and FA Cup earlier this year. United scored an early goal but Sevilla came back scoring an equalizer minutes later and the winner in the last half.

United fans are unhappy and they deserve to feel so. Anyway, let’s look at the player ratings and dissect how the Reds played:

David de Gea [5/10]

The Spaniard had a quiet game between the stick making just one save. de Gea was given the start ahead of Sergio Romero as the Argentine is used in cup competitions. However, de Gea didn’t do enough as his counterpart Bono and conceded two goals.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka [5/10]

Wan-Bissaka was average at best. He made four tackles during the game but had difficulties keeping Sergio Reguilon quiet. His attacking contribution was awry and didn’t help Mason Greenwood when United were in the final third.

Victor Lindelof [3/10]

Lindelof’s first half performance was satisfactory. He completed 91% of his passes and kept recycling possession. However, in the second goal, he kept staring as Luuk de Jong scored the winner for Sevilla. His in-game awareness was poor.

Harry Maguire [5/10]

United’s captain had a decent game. He was rock solid in possession and won five aerial duels. Maguire also took two shots as headers from corners but both were up above the net. A player of Maguire’s quality surely should have slotted it home.

Brandon Williams [3/10]

Williams was the worst player in the red shirt. He didn’t check his shoulder on Suso for the first goal and didn’t do enough to stop Munir’s cross for de Jong’s winner. Luke Shaw is injured and maybe its too much to ask of the 19-year-old defender but it was clear United cannot rely on him.

Fred [4/10]

Fred had an average game and was energetic from the first minute. His leg was in the air all the time looking to win challenges. However, he was reckless and didn’t contribute enough in the attack and when Sevilla hit on counter.

Paul Pogba [5.5/10]

An above average game from the Frenchman, he completed 90% of his passes and won 13 duels. He also completed nine dribbles [highest on the pitch]. However, his impact didn’t translate into goals. He lost the ball too many times [11].

Marcus Rashford [4/10]

Rashford was lucky to get the penalty but he looked hopeless the entire game. Sudden moments of brilliance was produced but Jesus Navas was too clever for Rashford.

Bruno Fernandes [6/10]

Fernandes scored his eighth goal in the Europa League campaign and was the center of the jigsaw puzzle for United. He roamed around the final third creating from every area of the pitch. However, United’s frontline wasn’t lethal enough. He completed four key passes and three tackles. However, similar to Pogba, he lost possession too many times [15].

Mason Greenwood [6/10]

Greenwood was class as usual. He missed a chance but who didn’t? The 18-year-old kept ticking in the final third and was a constant threat to Sevillas’s defense.

Anthony Martial [6/10]

Martial set Rashford up with a beautiful hold-up play. It resulted in Fernandes’ penalty goal. He was fouled four times including one last man tackle by Diego Carlos but was unfortunate to not get a call from referee. He missed two big chances when United needed their no.9 to be clinical
