Euro football betting and international football in general took a backseat this week as history was made in club football by the most decorated club in England.
Manchester United pulled off one of the most stunning victories in Champions League history with a 3-1 win at Paris Saint-Germain this evening to progress to the quarter-finals on the away goals rule.
Romelu Lukaku scored twice in the first half, either side of Juan Bernat’s equaliser before Marcus Rashford showed composure to tuck away a 94th minute penalty.
Paris Saint-Germain had won the first leg 2-0 a Old Trafford three weeks ago, whilst Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and others were all missing at the Parc des Princes this evening.
Here’s how our players fared:
David de Gea 6 – Couldn’t do anything about PSG’s goals and didn’t have much to do apart from a few parries.
Eric Bailly 2 – Lazy twice on Paris Saint-Germain’s equaliser in playing them onside and then allowing Juan Bernat a tap in. Rightfully replaced before half-time.
Chris Smalling 9 – A rock at the back this evening. Chris Smalling put his body on the line and made numerous interceptions to protect David de Gea.
Victor Lindelof 8 – Solid defensive performance and tidy in possession.
Ashley Young 8 – Excellent performance from the captain who lead by example. Solid in defence and helped with the attacks.
Scott McTominay 7 – Rarely lost possession in a mature performance.
Fred 7 – Picked up some good positions and played some neat performances in a decent performance from the Brazilian.
Andreas Pereira 6 – Tracked PSG players off the ball but didn’t do a great deal in attack. A steady performance from Andreas Pereira.
Marcus Rashford 7 – The attacker’s pace really scared the PSG defence, particularly in the first half. Cracking penalty to send us into the last eight given the circumstances.
Romelu Lukaku 9 – A third successive brace from the Belgian with his first goal coming in the opening two minutes. Romelu Lukaku was effective in holding the ball up and bringing teammates into play this evening.
Substitutes
Diogo Dalot (66 mins) 7 – We looked much better attacking down the right when Ole ditched Bailly and switched to the combination of Young and Diogo Dalot before half-time.
Tahith Chong (10 mins) N/A – Some youth was introduced in the final 10 minutes as we chased a third goal. Tahith Chong barely touched the ball but we did get the decisive goal.
Mason Greenwood (5 mins) N/A – Late run out for the teenager as Ole went all out attack in the final few minutes which proved successful.
