Manchester United booked a place in the semi-finals of this season’s FA Cup with a 2-1 extra-time win at 10-man Norwich City this afternoon.
Centre-back Harry Maguire came up with the winner three minutes before we were set for a penalty shootout.
Earlier, Odion Ighalo had produced a fine volleyed finish to give us the lead shortly after the break in what was our only shot on target until stoppage time.
Sergio Romero will have every right to feel disappointed not to have saved Todd Cantwell’s 25-yard equaliser 15 minutes from time.
Timm Klose was sent off for the hosts in the closing minutes after tugging down Odion Ighalo on the edge of the box as the last man.
Here are our player ratings:
Sergio Romero 5 – First thing he had to do was pick the ball out of the back of the net as Sergio Romero failed to get anything on Todd Cantwell’s 25-yard equaliser. Importantly cut out a cross in the final 10 minutes to deny Josip Drmic a tap in.
Diogo Dalot 7 – Comfortable game at right-back before being replaced by Brandon Williams on the hour. Diogo Dalot didn’t have much work to do defensively as Norwich only started attacking after we opened the scoring. Saw a lot of the ball down the wing but failed time and time again to pick out a teammate with his crosses.
Eric Bailly 7 – Failed to intercept a pass moments before Todd Cantwell equalised. Our defence had protected Sergio Romero very well up to that point.
Harry Maguire 9 – No faults on the centre-back for the goal. Harry Maguire had a solid game as Norwich didn’t offer all that much in attack. Forced a good save out of Krul in the second half of extra-time before scoring the winner minutes later in what was his third shot in the second half of extra-time.
Luke Shaw 7 – Comfortable defensively for most of the game but did allow Norwich to get a dangerous cross in from our left in the final 10 minutes. Couldn’t pick out a teammate with any of his own crosses, though they were few and far between. Stayed back as a last line of defence in extra-time as the rest of the squad camped in Norwich’s half.
Scott McTominay 7 – A largely comfortable game as Norwich didn’t create much down the middle, though their equaliser did come from a central long-range effort after our holding midfield pair had closed down other players in the move.
Fred 7 – Was decent in possession without doing much of note. Our two central midfielders were both replaced shortly after we conceded, for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic to add energy to the team.
Juan Mata 6 – Created the odd chance in a first that neither goalkeeper had anything to do. Replaced on the hour.
Bruno Fernandes 6 – Quiet game in a Manchester United shirt by his standards. Wouldn’t blame him for being tired with so many games in little time. Bruno Fernandes only created the odd chance, though did play the clever through ball for Odion Ighalo led to Timm Klose’s late dismissal.
Jesse Lingard 5 – Seemed keen to get on the scoresheet in his first game back but Jesse Lingard failed to hit the target in a number of attempts. Often slowed down our attacks too, before being replaced by Marcus Rashford.
Odion Ighalo 7 – Good reaction to the misplaced clearance to give us the lead with a nice volley. Odion Ighalo has now scored in all four starts for Manchester United. The striker was tugged down on the edge of the box by Timm Klose which earned the centre-back his red card.
Substitutes
Mason Greenwood (59 mins) 6 – Came on out wide and fired one decent chance across goal and wide. Otherwise, Mason Greenwood didn’t see much of the ball afterwards until forcing a good save out of Tim Krul in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Brandon Williams (59 mins) 7 – No obvious sign that Diogo Dalot had an injury but the youngster was introduced to play at right-back. Excellent tackle to deny Onel Hernandez a one-on-one late on.
Marcus Rashford (59 mins) 6 – Quiet first half hour on the left wing until putting a few crosses into the box in stoppage time. Forced a save out of Krul early into extra-time. Saw a lot of the ball thereafter but failed to do much with it.
Paul Pogba (44 mins) 8 – Nearly produced the goods immediately after coming on by playing Mason Greenwood in down the wing but the teenager’s shot across goal went wide. Was central to most of our attacks after coming on.
Nemanja Matic (44 mins) 7 – Offered support in attack with some sensible passing in the opposition half as we went in hunt for a winner.
Anthony Martial (25 mins) N/A – Over hit two simple passes towards Odion Ighalo within minutes of coming on. Failed to connect with Rashford’s cross from two yards out at the end of first half extra-time. However, picked up good positions in and around the box and was involved in the winning goal.
