Player ratings: Man Utd 5-2 Bournemouth

Manchester United came from behind to beat Bournemouth 5-2 in an entertaining encounter at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Some poor defending led to Junior Stanislas opening the scoring on 15 minutes, beating David de Gea at his near post.

Mason Greenwood produced a fine strike to equalise on half hour before Marcus Rashford made it 2-1 from the penalty spot five minutes later following a handball from Adam Smith.

We went into the break with a 3-1 lead thanks to a fine 20-yard strike from Anthony Martial, but the game wasn’t over there as Joshua King reduced the deficit at the start of the second half via a harshly-awarded penalty.

Greenwood produced another fine strike shortly after and then Bruno Fernandes made it 5-2 on the hour with a free kick on the edge of the penalty area.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rang the changes in the final half hour as the action dried up.

Here are our player ratings:

David de Gea 5 – Shouldn’t have been beaten by Junior Stanislas at his near post. Had little else to do all game apart from pick the ball out of the back of the net from a penalty.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Bailed out by a couple of offside flags today. Got forward but the only time he picked out a teammate with a cross was when Rashford’s strike was ruled out for offside.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Defence was a mess all over for Bournemouth’s opening goal but protected David de Gea well in the first half afterwards. Victor Lindelof was given a rest at the break with a 3-1 lead.

Harry Maguire 4 – Nutmegged by Junior Stanislas for the first Bournemouth goal and carelessly gave the ball away at the start to the second that almost lead to the visitors’ second. Penalty conceded moments later. Passing was all over the place at the back today.

Luke Shaw 7 – David Brooks barely got a touch of the ball before going off injured at half-time. Quiet game from Luke Shaw in terms of seeing the ball and didn’t put much in the box when he received the ball down the wing. Denied from close range by Aaron Ramsdale in the final 10 minutes though.

Nemanja Matic 8 – Excellent ball down the wing in the build up to our equaliser. Barely misplaced a pass all game but one he did led to the penalty. Nemanja Matic broke up Bournemouth’s possession in the middle of the park a fair few times in another dominant performance.

Paul Pogba 7 – Surprisingly not involved in any of our goals. Paul Pogba popped up around the penalty area, generally looked after the ball well and won his aerial battles in the middle of the park. Had a free kick saved in stoppage time.

Mason Greenwood 9 – Fine, powerful effort to equalise after picking up space on the left-hand side of the box. The youngster is getting better game-by-game. Superb second, taking on Diego Rico and firing past Aaron Ramsdale with his right foot into the far corner. Taken off with 15 minutes to go.

Bruno Fernandes 9 – The Portuguese star was heavily involved in running the show in the middle of the park once again. Picked up two assists but that was more down to the finishing of Greenwood and Martial rather than anything special from Bruno Fernandes. Fine free kick from 19 yards to make it 5-2.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Didn’t look overly confident in converting his penalty but it was good to see Marcus Rashford back among the goals and looking better today than in our previous games since the restart. Had a close range effort narrowly ruled out for offside in the final half hour.

Anthony Martial 8 – The confidence in the striker is evident from the smile on his face and the sublime finish on the stroke of half-time that put the game away. Dragged down on the edge of the area for the free kick from which Bruno Fernandes scored.

Substitutes

Eric Bailly (45 mins) 6 – Harshly conceded a penalty at the start of the second half despite the ball seemingly hitting the top of his shoulder and not gaining any benefit from it. Shaky start but comfortable after our midfield took over the second half.

Fred (25 mins) 7 – Came on at 5-2 to give Nemanja Matic a rest. Fred picked off a couple of passes and looked after the ball well. Forced a save out of Ramsdale in stoppage time.

Daniel James (15 mins) N/A – A late run out down the right for the winger who didn’t have much time to make a mark.

Juan Mata (11 mins) N/A – A nice one-two with Bruno Fernandes on the edge of the box but his cutback towards Ighalo was cut out.

Odion Ighalo (11 mins) N/A – Another late run out for the striker who found time to narrowly pull a late effort wide.
