Manchester United conceded in the 96th minute to be held 2-2 at Old Trafford on Monday night. As a result, we missed out on moving into the top four four.
Southampton took the lead after Paul Pogba got caught in possession just outside his own penalty area which led to Stuart Armstrong’s close-range finish in the 12th minute.
Marcus Rashford had an equaliser ruled out for offside three minutes later before producing a fine left-footed equaliser across goal following Anthony Martial’s excellent setup.
We were ahead less than three minutes later when Martial picked up a pass from Bruno Fernandes, ran at the Southampton defence before firing past Alex McCarthy to put us in front.
Southampton were on top for the final 20 minutes and equalised through substitute Michael Obafemi from on the goalline after a corner was knocked down into his path.
Here are how our players fared:
David de Gea 6 – Had little chance with Stuart Armstrong’s opener. Little else to do all game until forced into a good save to deny Nathan Redmond in the final five minutes.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Got stuck in with a few challenges. Received the ball down the right wing a few times but did little with it. Picked up a yellow card for a foul shortly below Redmond tested de Gea late on.
Victor Lindelof 9 – Made an important goalline clearance shortly after falling behind. Made an important block on Danny Ings’ effort early in the second half and made a critical interception of a cross in the final 20 minutes. A stalwart performance from the centre-back.
Harry Maguire 7 – Looked clumsy on occasion but aside from the goal David de Gea wasn’t busy.
Luke Shaw 8 – Played some good passes in the final third and had an assist chalked off for offside. Not at fault for the goal, otherwise had Stuart Armstrong in his pocket all game. Appeared to twist his ankle in the final 20 minutes.
Nemanja Matic 8 – Another solid performance in front of the back four, winning a number of tackles and interceptions. Wasn’t the best of performances on the ball for a change from Nemanja Matic.
Paul Pogba 5 – Caught in possession on the edge of his own penalty area which led to Southampton’s opener immediately after. Constantly found himself surrounded by the opposition as he struggled to get into the game. Frustrated at times. Substituted just after the hour.
Mason Greenwood 5 – Really struggled to get into the game down the right wing tonight. Most notable incident was being the recipient of a nasty foul from Oriol Romeu just before half-time with the Spaniard avoiding any action in which could easily have been a red card.
Bruno Fernandes 7 – Quiet game from the Portuguese superstar for the first time in a Manchester United shirt. Credited for the assist for Anthony Martial’s goal but really it was a solo effort from the striker. Otherwise Bruno Fernandes created very little as Southampton generally did a good job defensively. Worked hard off the ball.
Marcus Rashford 7 – Had a fine finish disallowed for offside in the opening 15 minutes. Excellent first time finish for the equaliser five minutes later. Missed from three yards midway through the second half.
Anthony Martial 9 – Fired a one-on-one straight at Alex McCarthy in the 10th minute following a mistake from James Ward-Prowse. Excellent control and lay-off for Rashford’s equaliser. Scored a fine solo effort himself three minutes later. Linked up well with Rashford, worked hard, made an amazing solo run in the final 10 minutes but fired his effort over.
Substitutes
Fred (28 mins) 6 – Brought on for his energy to sit in front of the defence, close Southampton players down as they saw a lot of the ball in the final 20 minutes. Made a good tackle on the edge of our penalty area late on. Fred didn’t see much of the ball himself.
Brandon Williams (16 mins) N/A – Replaced an injured Luke Shaw and had some defending to do in the closing minutes as we hung on for another three points. Picked up a nasty-looking head injury in the final minute.
Daniel James (7 mins) N/A – Could have replaced Mason Greenwood much earlier as the teenager was having a quiet game. Brought on as a counter-attack threat.
Scott McTominay (7 mins) N/A – Replaced Bruno Fernandes to help see out the win but we were caught out from a set piece deep into stoppage time.
