Player Ratings: Man Utd 1-3 Chelsea

Olivier Giroud poked Chelsea in front in the 11th minute of first half stoppage time. The additional time was followed a long delay for Eric Bailly being down with a serious looking head injury.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had sent our players out early for the second half for a positive response but it backfired after another howler from David de Gea allowed Mason Mount’s effort to slip through him to make it 2-0.

Harry Maguire turned the ball past de Gea for Chelsea’s third.

We were sloppy throughout the 90 minutes today and rarely caused Willy Caballero any problems in the Chelsea goal from open play.

Bruno Fernandes converted a late penalty that had been won by Anthony Martial.

Here are our player ratings:

David de Gea 3 – Could have been stronger with the opening goal in first half stoppage time and then another shocker for the second straight after kickoff for the second.

Eric Bailly 7 – Had been playing well before two successive head clashes shortly before half-time saw Eric Bailly down for around 10 minutes before being stretchered off at 0-0.

Harry Maguire 6 – Neither centre-back at fault for the first two goals today. Harry Maguire unfortunately poked the ball past his own goalkeeper to kill the game off in the final 15 minutes. The captain missed an excellent chance from a corner 20 minutes into the second half though.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Mason Mount caused our defence some problems today but otherwise I think our defence were better than the result suggested.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7 – Both goals came from the other wing but Aaron Wan-Bissaka didn’t offer anything going forward especially when we were looking to fight back.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Saw a fair bit of the all but unable to drive us forward today. Important block to deny Chelsea a third just before the hour.

Fred 5 – Chelsea saw a lot more of the ball than we did whilst Fred was on the pitch.

Brandon Williams 4 – Had a very tough outing at left-back today which included the sloppy giveaway to Mason Mount from which the midfielder doubled Chelsea’s lead. Brandon Williams struggled defensively when Willian and Reece James attacked down the wing.

Bruno Fernandes 6 – Nothing worked for us in attack today. Bruno Fernandes played a couple of nice passes but ultimately they lead to nothing. Coolly converted a late penalty.

Daniel James 5 – Quiet game as we saw little of the ball in attack before Daniel James was substituted 10 minutes into the second half.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Couldn’t get on the ball much and his only notable effort was from a very tight angle.

Substitutes

Anthony Martial (45 mins) 5 – Wasn’t far off winning a penalty moments after coming on but otherwise Anthony Martial barely touched the ball aside from winning the late penalty.

Paul Pogba (35 mins) 5 – Couldn’t produce the spark we needed after coming on at 0-2. Also picked up a yellow card.

Mason Greenwood (35 mins) 4 – A number of poor first touches and didn’t do anything positive of note.

Odion Ighalo (12 mins) N/A – Barely got a touch of the ball and didn’t get a chance to score.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah (12 mins) N/A – Gave Aaron Wan-Bissaka a rest late on whilst making his second Manchester United appearance in four days having been left out in exile for the past three years.
